Very Old Universe — a teal and green screen-print collage in the form of a triple Celtic knot, an emblem of infinity.

Living Universes

Screen-print collage · Alessandro Ravagnan · San Francisco

Universes moving through their life-cycles in the quantum dimension that gives rise to this physical one — and, ultimately, to all of us.

I'm a self-taught artist who creates generative collages representing universes, driven by a lifelong need to understand the one I live in. Over time these individual collages have evolved into a theoretical cosmology populated by living universes that inhabit the invisible quantum dimension underpinning our physical one.

I build each work by hand-tearing multiple sheets of tissue paper — each bearing the same screen-printed pattern — into hundreds, sometimes thousands, of fragments, much like mosaic tiles cut from a single stone. These are recombined into a final composition whose form draws on Celtic knots and other symbols of infinity. Destroying the printed sheets and rebalancing them into a whole becomes a sitting meditation.

The finished pieces invite the viewer into a reality that echoes the tenets of shamanic cultures, which position humans not as the apex of creation but as one strand in a multi-dimensional web of life.

Universes in Augmented Reality

Each physical work is also a study for an animated augmented-reality sculpture — the same universe, set in motion and released from the wall into space.
